Cold Email vs Cold Replies: What's the Difference?

A cold email asks a stranger for something. A cold reply joins a conversation a stranger is already having. Cold email works when you have a clear offer and the right person. A reply under their public post works when you just want to be seen as a useful person. The first is outreach. The second is not selling anything.

Why is a reply not a pitch?

The person already posted. They are in a thread, with other readers. Your reply is a contribution to it. If it contains a link to your product, a pitch or a "check my profile", it stops being a reply and becomes the thing people hide.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Add one specific detail, or one honest disagreement.
  • Reply within a day of the post.
  • Say it the way you'd say it out loud.

Don't

  • Open with praise.
  • Drop links.
  • Pretend to have experience you don't.

When should I use which?

Use cold email when you have an offer for someone. Use replies when you have nothing to sell yet and want people to know who you are. Many people do both, in that order.

Humanish helps with the second one: it finds people worth replying to, drafts replies in your voice and checks them for AI tells. You send each one yourself. The routine is in how to reply on X so people see it.

FAQ

Is "cold reply" an official term?

No. It borrows from cold email. We usually say "replies that get seen".

Can replies replace cold email?

No, they do different jobs.

Should I mention my product in a reply?

Almost never, unless they asked.

Do cold replies break X's rules?

Replies you read and send yourself are normal use. Automated reply spam is what X acts against.
