A reply is a response under someone's post, a mutual is someone you follow who follows you back, an impression is one time your post appeared on a screen, a thread is a numbered run of posts, and a connect post is a short post that says who you are and who you want to meet. The rest of this page explains each in a sentence or two, plus one or two terms people mix up.
What is a reply?
A reply is a post written directly under someone else's post. It shows up in their conversation and on your profile's Replies tab. For a small account, replies under people with larger audiences are the main way to get noticed. The method is in how to reply on X so people see it.
What is a mutual?
A mutual is an account you follow that also follows you. Mutuals are the people most likely to see and answer your posts, so they are good for conversation, while larger accounts give you reach.
What is an impression?
An impression counts each time a post appeared on someone's screen. It is not the same as a person reading it or following you. In my own X analytics, my biggest impression day brought 5 followers and a quieter day brought 66. The full numbers are in 2 to 1,000+ followers.
What is a thread?
A thread is a series of connected posts, usually numbered, that tell one longer story. It is useful when one idea does not fit in a single post.
What is a connect post?
A connect post is a short post, often with a few emoji bullets, that says what you do and who you would like to meet. It invites people with the same interests to say hello.
Terms people mix up
| Term | Not to be confused with | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Impression | Reach | Impressions count every view, including repeats; reach counts unique people |
| Reply | Quote post | A reply sits under the post; a quote post puts it on your own timeline |
| Profile visit | Follow | A visit is a look; a follow is a decision |
| Mutual | Follower | A follower follows you; a mutual is also followed by you |

FAQ
What is the difference between a reply and a repost?
A reply is your own words under a post. A repost shares someone's post to your followers, with no comment.
Do impressions matter?
Only as a sign that people are seeing you. Watch profile visits and follows too.
How many followers is a big account?
There is no official line. For reply targets, accounts with an audience of several thousand or more tend to have the most readers.
Is a thread worth it?
Sometimes. If a post would be too long to read in one go, yes.
